Your parents might say you must be in bed by nine o'clock, though you think it is completely unfair compared to your friend's "bedtimes". Or maybe you want to play the rest of that new game you bought yesterday, but you have to go to bed. Sneaking out of bed isn't always the right thing to do, but more than not, it is all worth sneaking out of bed in the first place.

  1. 1

Wear a pair of socks or keep slippers beside your bed before you head to bed. Read a book or do something to keep you busy while you wait.

  2. 2

Listen quietly if you are near enough to your parent's room to hear them snore (if they do).

    • Or, if you can hear the TV, turn off and see (from the crack of your door) the lights go off and wait a few minutes just to be sure everybody has left the room.

  3. 3

Slowly (especially if you share a room with a sibling) get out of bed. If you sleep on the top of a bunk bed, (keeping socks on will help) climb down the ladder at a steady pace.

  4. 4

Slip on your slippers (if you weren't wearing socks) and walk at a steady pace to your bedroom door. Know if the door creaks if opened, be careful. Silently tip-toe out of your room, leaving the door slightly opened, when you come back.

  5. 5

Go to the room you wish to go to. Beware of wooden floors or tiles, for wood may creak and tiles usually make noise from your feet (which is why you should wear socks/slippers).

  6. 6

Turn the volume down if you are planning to play on the computer. Keep in mind that you should keep a very low volume, or even better, no volume at all. The only downside to headphones is that if somebody walks into the room, you won't hear them. If it is the TV you are going to watch (or play video games), keep also a low volume, or no volume at all and put closed captions on. Be sure to set the lighting of your TV/computer on one of the lowest settings, so the people in the next room are less likely to see the light. If you are playing a small video gaming device such as a Game-boy or Nintendo DS, keep the volume down, once again, or no volume at all.

    • NOTE: Somebody could walk out of their room to get a snack, and chances are they will turn on lights.
    • When you hear somebody coming, shut down/turn off everything silently, but quickly. Crouch down (behind a nearby chair or under something very tall but couch works the best) to the floor and stay still. Try to even slow down your breathing. If the lights turn on, just hold your breath if you want to. If all goes well, the person should go back into their room. If you can peek at their room from the position you're at, see if the lights turn off. If not, wait a few minutes and slowly get your device out or continue whatever you were doing.
  7. 7

Close the device, turn off the TV, or shut down the computer and walk on your tip-toes out of the room and make your way back into your bedroom if all has been successful.

  8. 8

Turn the knob slowly and wait a few seconds when you open the door. Slowly open the door. Repeat when closing it.

  9. 9

Walk through the room to your bed slowly. Be careful when you are getting into bed, and try not to thump the wall.

  • Keep any traces of you staying up hidden. For example: Turn the caption off the television and change the lighting back, if there is enough time.

  • Double-check to make sure your internet browsing history is clear. Someone could snoop around in your computer and know that you've been up on the computer.

  • Turn on the hall light before your parents go up to bed. Most likely they will turn it off before they go into their room signaling it's time to start preparing.

  • Plan a hiding spot you can hide at for every room put it on paper so you can see the plan it is better. Keep blankets nearby in case you need to hide under them in each room.

  • Go to your room at the said bedtime, then shut your door and (quietly) sneak to the room you want to go to. Then find a place to hide. Note: Don't pass your parents.

  • When walking, stay very close to the walls, as the structure will be stronger and it will help keep you quieter. As well, be careful about wooden floors and carpet, and try to take special routes around the house to avoid the worse of the two, if one of them creates a large amount of noise.

  • Knowing how to see in the dark or improve your vision may help you as you sneak out of bed and bring a flashlight so you can see.

  • If you have a creaky bed, try to roll off quietly so no one can hear you.

  • If your doors are squeaky, apply WD-40 or oils to stop squeaky doors from creaking.

  • If you share a bed with someone, you might want to tell them beforehand so they don't wake up.

  • If you're going to play on a phone or an iPad, get thicker blankets so the light isn't visible.

  • Have a back-up excuse ready and plan. What happens next if your parent doesn't believe you; "You see, mom, I was only up to get a snack. Sorry, if I made too much noise and woke you up." "But if you were going to get a snack, why are you in the living room?" "I came from the bathroom. I was washing my hands" etc.

  • Keep a glow-in-the-dark watch so you know what time it is. A watch that lights up is more helpful though because the light only lasts for a few seconds. Also, you could bring your cellphone with you and open it and close it to see the time. Make sure all sounds are off, just in case someone texts you late at night.

  • For Step 2, a good way to see when the lights are off is to get a poster about 3/4 the size of the door (black works best) and nail it to the front of your door, leaving space on the top and the bottom. Now, you can see the lights in the living room without having to leave a crack in the door. Also, it can give you a little head start when you are trying to shut down/turn off everything and pretend to fall asleep like you're supposed to be since the person will have to kneel and pull it from the bottom.

  • Your parents may ground you or lose their trust in you.

  • If your parents don't buy your excuse, you could get into serious trouble.

  • Be aware if you tell a sibling your plan, the sibling could tattle on you and tell your parents.

  • Do not stay up all night or your parents will notice your grogginess and question you about it. Adequate amounts of sleep are essential to good health.
